Air pollution

Air pollution indirectly kills 1.7 million children a year worldwide and is responsible for a fifth of the UK's CO2 emissions. When parents drive their children to school, they create congestion and air pollution directly outside the school, harming both the pupils and the environment.

Clean Air week

Try to stop pupils driving to school:

We (eco group) spent a week handing out leaflets (below) to anyone who drove up to the school entrance. We were accompanied by members of staff to keep us safe and give is more authority, and spent every day before and after school catching anyone who dropped their child off and handing a leaflet to them to try encourage them not to drive. Both before and after this week we sent out a letter (below) with more detail on air pollution and what we will be doing during the week.

This is a great way to stop people driving to school as your physical presence gives much more of an incentive than a poster.

Write to your council

A great way to reduce pollution in your area is to write a letter to your local council to encourage them to create cycle lanes and convert buses to become electric.

Top tip: survey your school to see if there is support for cycle lanes or monitor the air pollution in the area to give you some evidence to back up your letter.
